Deuce and a Half Army Transport Truck

The Model, M-35A2 Cargo Truck known as a Deuce and a half located on the Plaza of the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial was approved by the Board of Directors and purchased in January of 2012.

The 2 ½ ton, 6 x 6 truck was a standard class of medium duty trucks designed during the beginning of World War II and used until a new model, the M-35A3, came along in the early 1990’s.


The basic cargo version you see here was designed to transport a cargo load of 2 ½ tons or around 5,000 pounds. They were used in all types of terrain and weather. These trucks were also heavily used as a troop carrier. The M-35A2 Transport Vehicle could seat three people in the front cab and up to twelve soldiers seated on wooden benches along the inside rails. The truck was also used to transport ammunition, medical evacuees and a variety of military supplies.

The M35 series truck was used by the Army from the Korean Conflict thru the Gulf War. This 6 x 6 was considered one of the most rugged cargo trucks every produced for the military. The 6-cylinder multi-fuel engine weighed around 13,000 lbs. and averaged around 8-10 miles to the gallon with a maximum speed around 55 mph.

The M35 is still in the U.S. military inventory and used by over 20 different countries around the world.
